Student Government Board Members

Academic Co-President: Steven Nemcek

Steven is a member of the inaugural class at California Northstate University College of Medicine (CNUCOM.) He was elected as the CNUCOM Class of 2019 Academic Co-President. Originally hailing from Brookfield Wisconsin, Steven attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he earned a BS degree with honors, double majoring in Biochemistry and Political Science. His senior thesis was entitled “Fibroblasts and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells are Phenotypically Identical” and was completed at the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research under Peiman Hematti, MD. Steven’s dual passions for the biochemical sciences and political philosophy lead him thereafter to become interested in what he considers to be the final frontier in understanding human physiology - the human mind. After completing his undergraduate degree, he undertook graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where he earned an MS degree in Physiology. His thesis was entitled “The Anatomy and Physiology of Conscious Motor Intention” and was completed under Valerie Hardcastle, PhD. As Acadmic Co-President he has worked extensively to mold and improve the educational environment at CNUCOM. His extracurricular interests include reading (fiction, science fiction, fantasy, biographies, and philosophy), playing tuba, amateur sailing, amateur gun shooting, soccer, and ultimate frisbee.

Non-Academic Co-President: Tanmayee Yenumula

Tanmayee graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2014, in three years and with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She took a gap year where she worked under the supervision of a vascular surgeon, focusing mainly of studies on abdominal aortic aneurysms and dialysis patients. In her free time, Tanmayee likes to play tennis, go snowboarding, travel, and go in search of the best food around.

Treasurer: Amram Averick

Amram graduated from the CUNY Macaulay Honors College in 2013 with dual majors of biochemistry and chemistry. Between then and joining the CNU CoM inaugural class, he conducted research on immunotherapy for glioblastoma in Pittsburgh followed by research in medical genetics in New York. Since starting classes at CNU he has started researching and writing on biologics and biosimilars. He enjoys skiing, hiking, baking (others rather enjoy it when he bakes too), and singing.

Secretary: Minji Cho

Minji Cho served as the secretary/historian for CNUCOM student government from 2015-2016 and will be continuing as secretary for 2016-2017. She received her B.S. in Biochemistry from University of California San Diego and her M.S. in Physiology from University of Cincinnati. Min Ji is an avid photographer and enjoys watching movies and Korean dramas in her spare time.

Activities Coordinator: Salil Babbar

Salil Babbar worked during the 2015-2016 school year to coordinate academic and non-academic events for the CNUCOM C/O 2019. He will be continuing in this role during the 2016-2017 school year.

PR/Media Coordinator: Christopher Phillips

Christopher graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT with a B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in Spanish. He student-taught high school physics for a year while getting a teaching credential at Fresno State then taught 2 years of 8th grade science. His wife Julie and he are the proud parents of 3 daughters. After leaving his teaching job and becoming an EMT, he got a job in the ED at Kaiser Permenente and started school at CNU as part of the inaugural class.

Historian: Aye Khine

Aye graduated from University of California, Davis in 2015 with a B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. She was going to take a year off until she heard about California Northstate University and decided to join the Inaugural Class. In her spare time, Aye enjoys hiking, photography, traveling, and trying new food places! As Historian, she is excited to record the experiences of CNU medical students as beautiful memories for the future.

College 1 Representative: Flyn Kaida-Yip

Flyn is one of three college representatives at California Northstate University College of Medicine (CNUCOM). He graduated from the University of Southern California with a BS in Neuroscience and a minor in Health Care Studies. The summer following his second undergraduate year, Flyn worked with surgical residents from UC Davis on a presentation reviewing the applications and safety of negative pressure wound therapy. Flyn also assisted an orthopedic surgeon in reviewing the benefits of educating little league coaches on sports related injuries. During his final year at USC, Flyn accepted a position as an editor of USC Scribe, an online journal dedicated to publishing student-written papers. Flyn enjoys playing tennis, reading, and traveling. 

College 2 Representative: Arleen Grewal

Arleen Grewal is a member of the Inaugural Class of 2019 at California Northstate University College of Medicine (CNUCOM). She earned a B.S. degree in Neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2013. Humbled by medically serving the underprivileged in Panama (2011) and Tanzania (2013), she proceeded to earn a M.S. degree in Global Medicine from Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) in 2015. She further fed her insatiable interest in human health by investigating the brain’s connectivity at UCLA (2011-2013), as well as, synapse plasticity and how visual information is encoded and processed during a one-semester stint at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) (2011). Currently, she serves as College 2 representative for CNUCOM’s Class of 2019, Publicity Chair for CNU Emergency Medicine Interest Group, and Liason for the Big Sibling/Little Sibling Program. When not immersed in the commitments of medical school, she finds pleasure in the simple things in life— baking chocolate chip cookies, reading by large, sunlit windows, and gyming.

College 3 Representative: Farrah Nasrollahi

Farrah is a UC Berkeley grad and double major in comparative literature and integrative biology. A fun fact about her is that she speask Farsi and Spanish. She loves dogs and snowboarding. She also loves surgery: heal with steal!
